Alana Lorens Has a New Romantic Suspense
Fellow Wild Rose, Alana Lorens, is here to tell us about her fascinating life and how it influences her writing.
Welcome Alana Lorens. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’ve been a published writer for more than 45 years, after changing careers several times over the decades. Most recently, I was a family law attorney in Pennsylvania, before retirement let me write full time. Currently a resident of Asheville, North Carolina, this aging hippie loves her time in the smoky blue mountains. I write romance and suspense as Alana Lorens, and sci-fi, fantasy and paranormal mystery as Lyndi Alexander. One of my novellas, THAT GIRL’S THE ONE I LOVE, is set in the city of Asheville during the Bele Chere festival, now sadly lost in time.
I live with my adult daughter, Tasha, who is on the autism spectrum—she’s the youngest of seven children. But there are plenty of other kids who’ve been “mine” over the years, too. I reason that this is my reincarnated life as iconic “Mom.” Next life I’m hoping for more of a Sex in the City vibe. 😊
Tasha and I share our home with three crotchety old cats, and six kittens of various ages.
Is writing something that comes easy to you or not?
I have periods of dry inspiration, like everyone else. But overall, I’ve been able to write fairly consistently over the last 15 years. Between my two pseudonyms, Alana Lorens and Lyndi Alexander, I’ve got 26 books published by a small press since 2009, with two more coming out this year and one already signed for 2025. The book I’m currently writing, tentatively titled Down the Rabbit Hole, is flowing at about 1,800 words a day without effort. I’m pleased, to say the least (and knocking on wood so as not to jinx it!))
Do you have an unusual hobby?
I’m a cat/kitten foster mom for several local nonprofits here in Asheville. I’d never heard of such a thing before I moved here, but maybe a dozen different agencies take in felines, get them spayed/neutered and socialized and place them in adoptive homes. We do the socializing part. In all honesty, the time I’ve spent over the years with these babies has helped my mental health more than I can say.
What interesting jobs have you had? How have those jobs affected your writing?
I started out after college with my bright shiny English degree and became a pizza maker. Met my husband and got married and moved from Ohio to Montana, where I learned to do floral design, a job I did there and also in Florida. I was hired by a shop whose designer left for the Mariel boatlift out of Cuba. Then I finally got to use my education when I became a newspaper reporter for the South Dade News Leader in Homestead, Florida. That experience informed this book, REMNANTS OF FIRE, quite deeply.
One of the attorneys I met while newspapering mentored me into going to law school at the University of Miami even though I was a single mom of two girls under five years old (what was I thinking?!). But practicing law for 30 years kept the family fed and gave me some fodder for the Pittsburgh Lady Lawyers series, for several characters who worked in law enforcement, and for many others.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
For REMNANTS OF FIRE, I studied with a healer for a year while I lived in Pennsylvania, and we learned many of the modalities—Reiki, visioning, hands-on work, and so on. Because of my own health, I also experienced many of the massage/chiropractic sorts of treatment, so I had a good idea what sorts of treatments the Goldstone would provide. At least to its regular clients. 😊
Is there anything special that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
My next release, CRUEL CHARADE, is coming from The Wild Rose Press on July 10, 2024. It’s another book about a lawyer, and this time is set where I practiced in Miami. Here’s a bit of what it is about.
Miami attorney Bet Lenard has had a rough year. She’s battling an unknown illness that drives her to drink to cope with her pain. Her lawyer husband has divorced her and taken the best part of their business, their home and their children. On the night of May 16, 1996, Bet finds herself in the Everglades in the middle of the night, drugged, lost and next to a burned car with a dead body in it.
As she tries to sort out the motives behind her would-be killer, even more suspects come to light. The only thing keeping Bet sane is her relationship with her therapist, who encourages her to struggle and survive, despite everything that’s gone wrong. How will Bet discover the truth and bring her enemy to justice before they strike again and, this time, succeed?
I hope people will check this one out—it’s something special!
