Barbara White Daille Writes Heartwarming Romance
A new year and a new line up of guest authors. My first author of the year, Barbara White Daille may be familiar to you. She has written over sixteen heartwarming sweet romances, published by Harlequin and Entangled.
So let’s welcome Barbara and learn more about her and her books.
When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I first started writing when I was about five, although it was mostly scribbling in crayon, since I didn’t know the alphabet yet. In eighth grade, I wrote my first full-length novel, a young adult mystery with “romantic” elements, along the lines of Nancy Drew. A few years after that, I moved on to writing for adults, first mystery and then romance. My first published novel, The Sheriff’s Son, was a romance, and since then, I’ve seen more than a dozen romances out in print and e-book with two publishers. FYI, my books usually are on the sweeter to sweet side.
What interesting jobs have you had? How have those jobs affected your writing?
Among other things, I’ve worked as a secretary, bus driver, taxi driver, and a library page and clerk. Once, for a few unforgettable weeks, I sold magazine subscriptions over the phone. Well, the job was great but I spent more time chatting with people who answered their phones than I did selling magazines. 🙂
Those jobs all affected my writing in the same way: they put me in touch with the public—with people, who are what my books are all about. I don’t include family or friends or acquaintances in my stories or write characters directly from real life. But working in those jobs, interacting with many different personalities from many different backgrounds, helped me create characters who are real and believable. . . to me, at least, and I hope to my readers.
Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
Too many authors and books to name! I’ll start with a few of the earliest influences, which were also the most important, because reading them is what hooked me into becoming a writer: the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Trixie Belden series. The mysteries intrigued me, the characters became role models, and picking up later books in the series felt like returning for a visit with friends—probably why most of my own books are parts of series.
I loved those childhood books so much, I could—and often did—binge-read them. I’d either finish one book and have the following book in the series right next to me, ready to open when I closed the cover on the previous one, or I would close the back cover and open the front cover of the same book and read it all over again. And yes, from time to time, I do that with adult novels I love, too.
Raise your hand if you’ve done either of those things. 🙂
Can you tell us about any other upcoming books, series, or writing plans?
Thanks for asking. I’m currently working on the next book in my Hitching Post Hotel series from Harlequin. The series revolves around a small wedding destination hotel set on a ranch in the Southwest and includes a matchmaking grandpa who started out wanting to see his three granddaughters happy and settled down. Thanks to reader interest in the series, Grandpa Jed soon extended his matchmaking services to include friends in the small town of Cowboy Creek.
I’m also working on a new book (number three) set in Snowflake Valley for Entangled. To date, this series focuses on the three oldest sisters of a close-knit family who live in a town dedicated to the Christmas season 365 days a year.
Is there anything special that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I fell in love with books at a very young age, and now I write for myself and you. My hope, always, is that my stories give you as much pleasure and enjoyment as reading brings to me.
From the back cover of The Lawman’s Christmas Proposal:
A HUSBAND FOR CHRISTMAS?
by Barbara White Daille
Mitch Weston’s back in Cowboy Creek, and self-proclaimed matchmaker Jed Garland has his single granddaughter Andi on his mind. Mitch is a lawman, good with the little ones and easy on the eyes. He and Andi were high school sweethearts, for heaven’s sake! Why can’t they see they’re perfect for each other?
Because Andi already lost one husband to a dangerous job, and now she’s all about playing it safe, for her sake and her children’s. Being a cop is everything to Mitch. After discovering Jed’s plan, Mitch and Andi come up with their own: they’ll pretend to get engaged and then break up due to irreconcilable differences. Jed’s got his work cut out for him—because this match needs a Christmas miracle!
