Jennifer Wilck Writes Jewish Romance
I am excited to have fellow New Jersey Romance Writer member Jennifer Wilck. She is here today to talk about her fantastic books and her writing life.
Welcome, Jennifer…
Is there an event in your life that affected you as a writer?
I’ve been writing and reading for as long as I can remember, but I never saw characters like me—Jewish—in romance. One day, my husband and I were on a road trip. When we traveled by car, we’d always get books on tape (audiobooks, today) and since we like different genres, we compromised by listening to mysteries, something we both enjoyed. We were listening to Faye Kellerman’s Peter Decker series. It takes place in a Jewish neighborhood. Peter is Jewish, Rena (the female protagonist) is not. And it hit me. Faye was writing Jewish characters and telling stories just like I wanted to, and you didn’t have to be Jewish to enjoy them. Right then, I started planning my first Jewish romance, and although I also write non-Jewish romances, I truly enjoy writing my Jewish ones best.
What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing, I hang out with my family and friends or relax in the garden, in front of the TV, or with my husband. We love doing the NY Times crosswords or playing board games.
What interesting jobs have you had? How have those jobs affected your writing?
When I graduated college, I went into public relations. I was an English and French major, so writing was my preference. But I ended up working with technology clients and had to learn to translate their “tech speak” into language the average person could understand. It was tricky for me, but probably very useful. And I often joke that I understand why something works, but not necessarily how to use it.
What was the most interesting place you ever visited?
The most interesting place I ever visited was Israel. My daughter was studying there for a semester, and we visited her for two weeks. The history and archeology of the place is amazing. It was my absolute favorite place to visit ever.
Can you tell us about any other upcoming books, series, or writing plans?
I’m very excited about the three-book series I’m currently writing for Harlequin Special Edition. The first book, Home for the Challah Days, released on August 22, and it’s a second-chance, enemies-to-lovers contemporary romance with Jewish characters. It takes place during the Jewish New Year in a quirky town with characters that were so much fun to write. The next book will take place around Passover and the third will take place around Hanukkah. The books are connected by three best friends. I loved developing characters that everyone can relate to, as well as external issues that affect society today. And I was thrilled at Harlequin’s commitment to diversity.

Jennifer Wilck is an award-winning contemporary romance author for readers who are passionate about love, laughter, and happily ever after. Known for writing both Jewish and non-Jewish romances, her books feature damaged heroes, sassy and independent heroines, witty banter and hot chemistry. Jennifer’s ability to transport the reader into the scene, create characters the reader will fall in love with, and evoke a roller coaster of emotions, will hook you from the first page. You can find her books at all major online retailers in a variety of formats.
Jennifer started telling herself stories as a little girl when she couldn’t fall asleep at night. Pretty soon, her head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Even as an adult, she thinks about the characters and stories at night before she falls asleep or walking the dog. Eventually, she started writing them down. Her favorite stories to write are those with smart, sassy, independent heroines; handsome, strong and slightly vulnerable heroes; and her stories always end with happily ever after.
In the real world, she’s the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men she knows. She believes humor is the only way to get through the day and does not believe in sharing her chocolate.
