Meet Awesome Romance Writer Skye McDonald
Skye McDonald, a fellow member of New Jersey Romance Writers, is here today to talk about her writing life and share her newest hockey romance.
Welcome Skye,
When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
As a teen, I penned epic sagas in spiral notebooks while listening to Delilah At Night on my clock radio. But I started writing my first book, Not Suitable for Work, in late 2014. I finished it within about four months and immediately had the idea for book two, Off the Record. From there I spun out the whole Anti-Belle series in about three years, including an early draft of Scoreless, Connecticut Commodores Book 1!
What other genres of novel would you love to write?
I’d love to write a cozy mystery. I’ve been watching a lot of Midsomer Murders lately, and I think it would be so fun to craft a cozy whodunnit. But I would likely still have a love element in the story. I can’t imagine writing a story without a little kissing in it!
What do you do when you are not writing?/Do you have an unusual hobby?
Day-to-day, my free time is spent with my dogs. I have an Australian Shepherd and a Border Collie. We run, hike, and watch TV in a big pile on the couch together.
One of my favorite things is running The Wise Women Collective. We are a local women’s circle. Originally begun as a group for entrepreneurs, we’ve evolved into a beautiful community who gather to grow and learn together.
When I can, though, I like to go SCUBA diving and snowshoe. I also enjoy running obstacle course races. It’s so fun, like an adult playground, but the mud is unreal!
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
YES! But it’s not the spicy scenes like people always ask. Since my first series is set in my hometown, there are several references to things I did in childhood such as hanging out on Nashville’s Second Avenue with friends.
I’ve also had fun putting random weird encounters into books. In Not Suitable for Work, there’s the coworker telling Celeste, “You know what they say about girls who drink whiskey… Don’t worry, it’s a good thing.”
The wildest thing that actually happened was in Just Your Type, where Megan is on a coffee date with a guy who tells her about being into tantric massage–and also that he lives with his mom. Yes, indeed, that was an actual Tinder date I went on!
Is there anything special that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
My stories are designed to make you laugh, cry, & swoon. Each one features a unique woman learning to love herself before she can claim her “happy ever after” partnership. (Spoiler: she always does!)
I write romance because my goal is to make you fall in love with yourself a little more. Happy ever after in real life is real–it’s about valuing all the parts of you and knowing you deserve to be happy. (I also write romance because I loooove the sizzle!)
And finally, connecting with readers is very important to me. My newsletter and Facebook group are very active and let me stay in touch with readers near and far.
He’s a superstitious goalie. She’s the owner’s daughter (with her V-card).

AUDREY: My love life is colder than an ice rink in January.
Growing up around a pro hockey team means that the players are like a posse of big brothers. Date a hockey player? No. Way. Date anyone without getting teased about it? Also a big old nope. I don’t care. I love my job, and I love the team. Hockey is life. What else do I need?
But then Quentin Paris came along and shook up my season.
The Connecticut Commodores’ new goalie thinks he can win me over with his smug smile, blue eyes, and too-smooth Quebec accent. Guess again, buddy. Audrey Cathcart knows better than to fall for a hockey player–especially a superstitious, quirky goalie.
At least, I thought I knew better.
QUINN: Audrey Cathcart works to get a rise out of me anytime we’re together. And can she get an, ahem, rise out of me.
This is my breakout season in the pros. I won’t do anything to jinx my luck, especially when I’m on a shutout streak and playing the best hockey of my life. One block at a time. One game at a time. As a goalie, I’d never mess with my routines. Stay cool. Stay focused. Don’t let them shake you.
But Audrey Cathcart has me anything but cool. Filthy fantasies threaten to derail my concentration whenever she’s near. When she suggests we become “puck buddies,” the venom between us becomes a fire hotter than a run for the playoffs.
My teammates think of her as a sister. There is nothing familial about how I feel about her. Can this be more than a secret fling?
You’ll love this book if you love hockey, strong female protagonists, hockey, sexy French accents, hockey, and hate to love with witty banter. (And also hockey. )
