Meet Romantic Suspense Author Annie Parnell
Meet Annie Parnell. She writes exciting Georgian and Regency romantic suspense. Today she talks about her writing life, marketing, and her new podcast
How did you choose the genre you write in?
I write Historical Romantic Suspense–which is a mashup. Most suspense is written in what would be considered a contemporary time period–World War II to present day. My work takes place from mid 1700’s to early 1800’s.
There are 3 parts to this answer: a) a librarian friend put me onto reading Mary Balogh and shortly after I experienced a life threatening health crisis–I was diagnosed w/cancer. I knew if I was to survive I needed to take care of my attitude and live in a place where I was guaranteed an HEA. So I started devouring historical romances. The third part is I love history, especially the minutiae. I put my heroines in a lot of jeopardy so some of the things I’ve had to research: when were fire escapes invented, British architecture–urban, not just country houses, the history of Lloyd’s Coffee House which ultimately lead to the creation of Lloyd’s of London, and the typical things–clothing, food, undergarments. shoes.
How much research do you do for each book you write?
Tons. I fall down a black hole of research at least once a day. I am like Alice in Wonderland. Poorly researched fiction is a killer for me–yanks me right out of a story so I work hard not to do that to my readers.
Can you tell us about any other upcoming books, series, or writing plans?
My next book in the Sisterhood Series is called “A Man of Business”. I start out using the trope of a woman masquerading as a man but as in all my books I twist and turn the trope on its head. It will release in April. After “A Man of Business” releases I will continue work on a 5 book prequel series to the Sisterhood books, called “The Coffee House Philosophical Society”.
Is there anything special that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you. One of the best compliments I ever received was when a fan said to me she wanted to be Eleanor. Eleanor is “The Reluctant Countess” and one of the founders of the secret Sisterhood society. You should think of her as a feminist fairy godmother for the rest of the series. And I am always on the hunt for beta readers.
How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for your genre?
I am still playing around with this. One thing I am doing is revamping my website and I have begun podcasting. My podcast is NOT an interview, and I do not hand out advice, it is me on mic reading “The Reluctant Countess” sound effects, music, intro, outro and all. The podcast is called “Have I Got a Tale to Tell and the first 13 chapters are currently available on Audible and Google Play.

Annie’s been making up stories for as long as she can remember, even before she knew her alphabet. Back then she drew her stories with her box of 64 Crayola crayons. She once used her father’s Fortune magazine as her drawing pad. He was less than pleased. It was her first critical review.
